FOWLOW Frederick Robert, Commander, CD, RCN, (Ret’d) – Sea Logistics

Fred Fowlow passed away peacefully at the Colonel Belcher Care Facility, Calgary on Saturday, July 11, 2015, at the age of 91 years.

A native of Saskatchewan, Fred attended the University of Saskatchewan, and was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant in the RCNVR in 1942. He served on Corvettes in the Triangle Run, finishing the war in the Fleet Air Arm as an air observer. Fred returned to the RCN in 1949 as a Supply Officer. He subsequently graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Queen’s University in 1950. Fred then served a tour of duty on HMCS Athabaskan in Korea (1951-52). He received his Master of Arts in public administration from Carleton University in 1966. In 1967 he served as Supply Officer of the last RCN aircraft carrier, HMCS Bonaventure. After postings in Atlantic City, Shearwater N.S., Ottawa, and Cornwallis he served his last posting in Montreal as Commandant of the Canadian Forces Management School in 1970. He retired from the Navy in 1972. After moving to Calgary in 1972, Fred first assumed the position of Director of Science, and then Registrar, at Mount Royal College. He retired from Mount Royal College in 1986, and continued to be active in the Naval Officers Association (NOA) of Canada as well as various other service organizations. Fred, an avid golfer, was also a regular contributor to the Starshell, the national magazine of the NOA, wherein his many informed articles on defence policy had a direct impact on the Canadian Forces in general and the RCN in particular.

Fred is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Joyce; his sons, Andrew, David, and Timothy; their spouses Denise, Loraine, Glenda, and Laurie; grandchildren Anna, Amy (Chris), Sara, Corrina, Matthew, and Karen; and great-granddaughter Brianna.
